Our Century
On Sunday, February 1, 1998, The Plain Dealer launched a feature in its Sunday Forum section that not only examined the events that made news in Greater Cleveland throughout the 1900s, but offered a sense of what it was like to live here in times long past. For 100 consecutive Sundays, in chronological order, the Our Century page focused on each year in the 1900s.
Our Century recounted for Plain Dealer readers how the first third of the century brought Cleveland unprecedented growth and prosperity. It detailed how the Depression slowed that growth. Later, it recalled for readers the dark days of the late 1970s when Cleveland became the first major American city in decades to slip into default. And, along the way, Our Century focused on the personalities who shaped this city's rich history: its politicians, its sports figures and - most important - its everyday people.
